MARSS00010 - Marine Radio Operator's VHF Skill Set & MARSS00011 - Marine Radio Operator's VHF and HF Skill Set

These skill sets are for standalone units to enable you to operate marine radios either in VHF alone of VHF and HF. We usually recommend students complete the MARSS00011 skill set in both VHF and HF as this enhances students' understanding, allows greater flexibility in operating radios and we do this at no extra cost to the student. Once students receive competency in one of these skill sets we apply on the students’ behalf for the associated licence with Australian Maritime College.

We include this skill set in the course timetable for students completing MAR20324 Certificate II in Maritime Operations (Coxswain Grade 1 NC) as the marine radio licence a requirement for the Coxswain Grade 1 industry licence. The marine radio licence is also a requirement for the Master <24 metres industry licence. Students need to have a marine radio licence to be able to register a marine radio to their name for international voyages. Therefore, this course appeals to students who are interested in pursuing a maritime career, sailors looking to make large voyages or recreational boaters seeking more information about how to operate their marine radio.

As this is a standalone unit skill set, there is no presumed knowledge or course entry requirements.

There is also a Language Literacy, Numeracy and Digital (LLND) test that we require all students to complete prior to course commencement so that we can accommodate to everyone’s needs ensuring that no one is disadvantaged. Please see the LLND requirements.

MARSS00008 Shipboard Safety Skill Set (ESS)

ESS is essential if you want a career in the maritime industry and it is a compulsory component of the maritime qualifications we offer. This course is suited to those not yet ready for our qualifications as it equips you with the fundamental skills needed to get yourself comfortable on the waterways. Recreational boat owners, volunteer crews, sailing club members and competitive sailors should also consider this course for safety reasons.

Please note that parts of this course are strenuous, and students need to be physically fit for the sea survival components such as using a life raft and swimming for 50 metres and fire-fighting drills, as they require active participation. This course is the minimum qualification that maritime employment will accept.

There is also a Language Literacy, Numeracy and Digital (LLND) test that we require all students to complete prior to course commencement so that we can accommodate to everyone’s needs ensuring that no one is disadvantaged. Please see the LLND requirements.

As an entry level course, there is no presumed maritime knowledge required or expected, however students do need to be able to swim to effectively participate in the activities and prove competence in the criteria.

Please note: you will be required to undertake a few physical activities such as:

  • swimming in a group for a minimum of 50 metres
  • swimming in a lifejacket for a minimum of 50 metres
  • towing with a life jacket for a minimum of 25 metres
  • remaining afloat without a lifejacket for at least 5 minutes

This is generally obtainable from most employers on commencement of duties).

There is also a Language Literacy, Numeracy and Digital (LLND) test that we require all students to complete prior to course commencement so that we can accommodate to everyone’s needs ensuring that no one is disadvantaged. Please see the LLND requirements.
