Fight and extinguish fires on board a commercial vessel

FIGHT FIRE
--------------

An action packed day of practical day learning:
  • The four critical requirements: alarm, rescue, extinguish, contain
  • Why the skipper will stop the vessel and keep the fire downwind
  • How to put out an engine fire using the most suitable type of extinguishing agent
  • You will learn what works, what doesn't and what will do the task in the least amount of time, where to aim and what motions to use

FUNCTION

  • Active participation in regular crew drills
  • Ability to extinguish a fire, safely
  • Know the classes of fire and selection of extinguishers
  • For off shore and in shore commercial crew; and recommended for recreational boaters

CONTENT

This is one of the most exciting, risky and interesting training elements on offer.

  • As a team, set up fire enclosure
  • Safety brief including personal protection, remove jewelry, work boots or enclosed footwear, cotton clothing, (no polyester)
  • Fight live fires using water, foam, CO2, DCP and fire blanket
  • Remove and stack fire enclosure

COURSE

This intensive course operates every month at Pyrmont and combines:

  • Half day: 8am to 11am
    Set up and remove fire enclosure
    Fight live fires, plus completion of classroom theory and workbook
    Training cost 1 unit: $195

Once your booking has been processed you will be sent by email an enrolment and payment form, OHS requirements and directions to the venue

BRING

  • For fire fighting: closed in shoes, cotton long sleeved shirt and long trousers (no poly)
  • Money for lunch at Sydney Fish Markets pre-departure at 11.30am or BYO lunch box. Afternoon tea provided.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Advise the school of any respiratory health condition ...for DCP fire extinguisher use; and on the day ensure mask is worn!
  • To gain endorsement the candidate must successfully complete one (1) unit of competency, as listed below.
  • You are then awarded a Statement of Attainment in Fight and extinguish Fires
  • This unit is a requirement for Certificate I, II, III in Maritime Operations and Marine Engineering

  • Class D fires (involving combustible metals). Use only special purpose extinguishers and seek expert advice
  • ALL FIRE EXTINGUISHERS MUST BE REFILLED AND TESTED AFTER USE
