FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions
TDM30407 Certificate III in Transport and Distribution
(Coastal Maritime Operations – Master Class 5) I have heard I can apply for the Master Class 5, without doing the Coxswain oral assessment?
This is correct and suitable for those with adequate sea-service (in-shore and off-shore on commercial and recreational vessels). However the Master Class 5 training certificate requires compulsory units in Certificate I General Purpose Hand (the basic OHS training and sea survival) and Certificate II Coxswain (Fight Fire and Safety and Seamanship Week 2); only then will you achieve a Master Class 5 certificate. For my Master 5, how many hours do I need?
The industry standard required by NSW Maritime is 4,500 hours, of this 50% must be greater than 2nm off-shore. If you do not have significant off-shore hours your ticket will be restricted to in-shore until you have sufficient off-shore hours to have the restriction lifted. However due to your sea-service, work experience and education certificates, the hours required may vary on an individual basis. Example: If you have a fully completed record of service (ROS) book, with work experience signed off over a period, the hours required may be reduced by 50%.
