Training Units

The TDM10107 Certificate I in Transport and Distribution (Maritime Operations), General Purpose Hand qualification course is nationally recognised by maritime authorities in all States of Australia and selected countries internationally. Five (5) training units are required for the completion of the TDM10107 qualification:

Course Content

Day 1:Shipboard Safety and Teamwork
Time:8.45am to 4.00pm
  • Complete SEA SCHOOL enrolment, attendance, provide identification and current 'Apply First Aid' statement of attainment or similar (if already a holder).
  • Introduction to SEA SCHOOL, fellow participants, safety orientation, distribution of Handbooks.
  • Commencement of trainer led presentation.
  • Nautical terminology; understanding orders given and non-verbal communication skills.
  • Teamwork, observing standards in work, behaviour and hygiene.
  • How to deal with difficult people and resolving conflicts.
  • General vessel operations and OHS safety briefs for guests, crew and visitors.
  • Shipboard safety, identify risks and hazards, reporting and replacing equipment if necessary.
Day 2:Practical training: Knots, Lines, Splicing and Assessments
Time:8.45am to 4.00pm
  • Understanding that the lines and knots required to berth a commercial vessel are all aimed at safety, reliability and ease of untying.
  • How to splice, tying a bowline, clove hitch, sheet bend and sheep shank.
  • Basic seamanship skills, spring lines, handling and throwing lines.
  • Learn how to use the crucifix, sampson post, kidney bollard, tying off and biting off.
  • Lash and secure items.
  • Steps to avoid embarrassment and damage to the vessel.
  • Completion of General Purpose Hand worksheets and question papers.
Day 3:Vessel Practical: Lines, Man Overboard, Sea Survival
Time:8.45am to 4.00pm
  • Board the SEA SCHOOL training vessel "Sydneysider", disembark.
  • Travel to a commercial berth on Port Jackson (Sydney Harbour).
  • Berthing and unberthing the training vessels.
  • Line throwing at bow, mid-ship and stern.
  • Keeping a sharp lookout, man overboard.
  • Travel the shipping lanes, noting the navigational marks.
  • Anchor or mooring tasks prior to simulated abandon ship drill and muster.
  • Donning the jacket, jump from ship; in water tasks and techniques.
  • Righting and boarding the life-raft and the necessary teamwork to survive.
  • Enter the SEA SCHOOL training vessel "Sydney Insider", remove jacket and brief rest.
  • Re-board the SEA SCHOOL training vessel "Sydneysider".
  • SEA SCHOOL will provide a simple barbecue of sausages, bread rolls, salad, cordial and cookies on board the training vessel; return to dock.
Day 4:Deckhand Knowledge & Survival at Sea Tasks & Assessment
Time:8.45am to 4.00pm
  • Practical survive at sea de-brief, group discussion and Trainer feedback.
  • Survival at sea grab bag, tasks aboard a life raft or boat, helicopter evacuation.
  • How to operate lifesaving and survival equipment; activating an EPIRB.
  • General Purpose Hand Q&A required knowledge slide presentation.
  • Completion of Sea Survival worksheets and question papers.
  • How to apply to NSW Maritime to gain deckhand endorsement and complete the medical.
  • Complete 'Your Opinion Counts' feedback form.

Days 1 to 4 usually follow the above content, exception: sea survival theory or line handling may be introduced on Day 1, and practical sea survival may be scheduled on Day 4.

Required Reading

  • Every participant of the TDM10107 Certificate I General Purpose Hand course is provided with a valuable Handbook. The Handbook includes typical daily tasks, the procedures, emergency response tasks, nautical terminology, reference material and for student use only.
  • Reading of the 250 page SEA SCHOOL General Purpose Deckhand Handbook is required and necessary to support your learning outcomes and help produce a better result in your assessment tasks; and your employability.
  • The Small Ships Manual, and the Australian Boating Manual by Dick Gandy are also suitable and recommended reference books for maritime career participants who continue with training and sea experience.

Maritime Application

The next step is to lodge your NSW Maritime General Purpose Hand Application for Endorsement as a General Purpose Hand. To apply you must also provide training certificates and Deckhand documentation. Please refer to our Information section for more details.
