Boat Licence and Boat Handling
--------------

You can do the minimum compulsory ‘theory’ course, or join the ‘theory and practical’ package which includes time at the wheel of our training vessel.

Since 2002, Sea School has successfully trained more than 6,500 students and is your first choice in boat licence courses. Choose a venue near you or enjoy all the 'bells and whistles' at Sydney's first MARINE TRAINING CENTRE on the foreshores of Sydney Harbour, just moments from the Sydney Fish Markets.

Our professional marine educators, along with a straightforward presentation, will help you achieve a successful result in the Maritime test. Ensure the safety of your family and friends with step-by-step tuition that includes the rules, navigational charts, safety equipment and how to don a life jacket.

With the practical course, you get behind the wheel to learn docking methods, gear control, man overboard, and more.

Upon completion of the training, present the Sea School Course Completion report, your ID and payment of a 1 or 3 year fee to a NSW Maritime office to obtain your boat licence. It’s that simple.

We promote safety, ability and competence and offer the best price in town (due to client numbers). Here are the options for persons over 12 years of age:

BOOK EARLY to avoid disappointment either on line or phone 1300 666 416 or 1300 663 417

Option 1: Compulsory Course for the NSW Boating Licence $95
The boat licence course is run over 4 hours. Upon successful completion simply present your course report to a NSW Maritime office to obtain your licence. It’s that simple. No further testing is required. Boat Licence training is designed for everyone, so why not bring your family (ages 12 and up welcome).

Option 2: Compulsory Course + Practical Boat Handling Lesson $195
Option 1 plus a practical boating lesson. It’s the best combination and most popular. Gain confidence and skills onboard the training vessel. Become familiar with docking, mooring, manoeuvring, anchoring, and putting into practice the collision avoidance and navigational rules.

  • Includes: Boat Licence course material, NSW Boating Handbook, Tide Chart, Maritime approved assessment and course completion documents.

Option 3: Practical Boat Handling Lesson $100
If you already have a licence, then opt for an advanced boat handling lesson. This is your chance to learn the art of boat handling, when to use speed, when not to, how to dock in difficult winds and currents. Also learn to use spring lines, wave handling and much more. It's your choice, and you get the best from a professional skipper. Cost: $100 per hour aboard your boat; or $100 per person for 2hrs in a small group on our boat.

Why do we need training before getting a boat licence?

Time spent on the water will develop skills, knowledge and confidence when operating a vessel and help prevent accidents on the waterways.

  • In NSW a Boat Licence was made more difficult to obtain from October 1st, 2006. The state law now requires people over 12 years of age to complete training prior to operating a powered vessel 10 knots or more (that's an outboard of about 5-6hp)
  • Boating offers fun, excitement, relaxation and social activity away from our busy lifestyle. Its popularity means more people with more boats, which in turns means more dangers, like collision and swamping.
  • Most people want to find out how to respond in an emergency and in a timely manner. They want to protect the family, friends and assets, so they choose a registered training organisation and join a boat licence course.
  • Many recreational skippers have a passion for boats and want to learn more. They join a quick 'practical' course such as advanced boat handling, navigation at night, deckhand, coxswain, sea survival or marine radio to fast track their seamanship skills.
